Today Filip Ilievski, the second of 6 PhD’s is going to defend his thesis, entitled: “Identity of Long-Tail Entities in Text”.

Recent incidents witness that digital identity can easily be confused, stolen, or abused. Consider, for instance, the case of the former Brittish MP, Lord Alistair McAlpine, who was falsely accused of child abuse due to mistaken identity in November 2012.

People, organizations, and other entities are described in many textual documents, including news articles, encyclopedias, and social media. Hence, identity is increasingly becoming a practical matter. There is urgency for developing robust computational tools that can correctly determine the identity of entities in text.

Today, it is well-understood how to determine identity of entities (e.g., Trump) with low ambiguity and high popularity/frequency in communication (the head), as witnessed by the high accuracy scores in the standard Natural Language Processing (NLP) task of Entity Linking. It is unclear, however, how to interpret long-tail entities (e.g., Filip): each different and potentially very ambiguous, with low frequency/popularity, and scarce knowledge.

This research investigates how the performance of NLP techniques for establishing the identity of long-tail cases can be improved through the use of background knowledge. It focuses on five aspects of this challenge: description/definition, analysis of evaluation, improvement of evaluation, enabling access to more knowledge, and building knowledge-intensive systems.

This thesis demonstrates that interpreting long-tail entities in text is an under-addressed and multifaceted challenge. Better evaluation and more extensive use of knowledge are promising directions forward.

After five years of my Spinoza project Understanding-Language-By-Machines, I am very pleased to inform you that today the first of 6 PhD’s is going to defend his thesis, entitled: “The meaning of word-sense-disambiguation research”, by Marten Postma. A fascinating report that reflects on more than 15 years of research to understand the meaning of language. As Marten clearly explained: it has still not been solved but we are starting to understand the problem and new ways of solving it. I am also proud that he will continue working as a PostDoc at my CLTL-lab on the new NWO-project “Framing Situations in the Dutch Language”

I am also very proud to present the renewed website http://understandinglanguagebymachines.org.

It explains three key notions of our research: identity, reference and perspective of language understanding.

What are the things in the world, what words and expressions in our language can refer to these and from what perspective do we choose to make reference in particular way? What makes this challenging is the massive ambiguity and variation in language which not even big data models can handle.

Four different projects have addressed these problems in the last five years:

Project 1 — Word Sense Disambiguation

Project 2 — Perception & Description of Images

Project 3 — Storylines & Perspectives

Project 4 — Context & Background Knowledge

Recently, a fifth project started in which all aspects come together in the physical embodiment of a robot called Leolani. Understanding the world and being able to talk about it with humans is a real challenge for robots:

Project 5 — Make Robots talk
